A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME By Emer Halpenny
AGE : 4 – 6
GENDER : male and/or female as suits your group
CAST NUMBER : 7 parts + (optional chorus group can be any number)
RUNNING TIME : 10 minutes, including music
When asked what they would love to be in a play, the children in one of my junior groups came up with the following characters. These can easily be changed to suit whatever your students would like to be, except for the parts of Angel and Little Bird. If your group is small, the chorus part can be played by the combined characters, and the SILVER CLOUD lines & dance left out. LITTLE BIRD is a nice part for a quiet child.
CHARACTERS:
ANGEL
LITTLE BIRD
BUMBLEBEE TRANSFORMER
WILLIE WONKA
POP STAR
BAT MAN
SUPERMAN
SILVER CLOUDS (chorus)
SILVER CLOUDS Listen to the storm. There is thunder and there is rain.
POP STAR It is so loud!
BAT MAN & SUPERMAN It’s the loudest storm ever!
ANGEL It’s my storm. When I cry it rains and it rains.
LITTLE BIRD Why are you crying?
ANGEL I am a Dream Angel. I want to make dreams come true.
(The LITTLE BIRD whispers in her ear and flies away. The ANGEL smiles and dries her eyes. She spreads her wings and flies in a large circle with the SILVER LINED CLOUDS (see movement note below) until she meets the TRANSFORMER. He is standing still in a large black box, which will open up when he transforms.)
ANGEL Hello, who are you?
TRANSFORMER I am a Transformer. I am so sad.
ANGEL Why are you sad?
TRANSFORMER I want to transform into a bumblebee. It’s my dream.
ANGEL I can make your dream come true. (ANGEL or two of the CLOUDS open the cardboard box and the TRANSFORMER steps out of it, dressed as a bumblebee.)
TRANSFORMER But how did you know?
ANGEL A little bird told me.
SILVER CLOUDS Little Bird, Little Bird! (We see the LITTLE BIRD fly over to the ANGEL and whisper to her as a little boy walks on, eating a bar of chocolate. He sits down CS and sighs to himself, looking at the chocolate bar. The ANGEL and CLOUDS fly over to him as before)
ANGEL Hello, who are you?WILLY My name is Willy Wonka. I wonder…
ANGEL What do you wonder?
WILLY I want to own a chocolate factory. It’s my dream.
ANGEL I can make your dream come true. (She gestures to the CLOUDS & two of them give him a top hat and cane).
WILLY Buy how did you know?
ANGEL A little bird told me.
